I have covered the dangers and the precautions that must be taken when you are taking out a student loan. I have covered some of the basic types of repayment plans also. As this goes, there are some forms of student loan repayment options that will start the repayment process half-way while you are still in college.
Either way, for a new student that is just getting out of high school and going to college for the first time, it is a time to where you must start to grow up as you will no longer be living with your parents. This can be a tough adjustment, especially if you are not used to budgeting money at all. So here are some money saving tips for students to get off on a good start.
Before you apply for a student loan, you should check to see if you can apply for any type of scholarship or other type of grant. Even a small partial scholarship can save you a bundle of money. Next you will have to plan ahead, well before get put into a dorm room.
Where will you be getting your source of income from? And how much of it will you be getting monthly? Lots of students get income from their parents, the student loan, or maybe getting a part time job…Once you determine how much income you will have coming in then it is time to make a weekly budget for yourself.
When you set this budget you must be strict on yourself not to go over it. If you can manage to keep a tight budget all the way through college, this will make it a lot easier on yourself to be able to repay your student loan back when it comes time for the repayment.
Food can kill a budget if you do not plan it accordingly. The easiest way to cut back on food is to get out of the habit of eating out and getting fast food, like you may have done a lot when you were living with your parents. Try to pack a lunch where ever you go, if you do this you will start to see how much money you can really save.
One great thing about being a student is that there are a number of businesses that offer student discounts. Take your student identification badge with you every where that you go, and every where you go ask if they have a student discount even if you do not see anything about it displayed anywhere. It wont hurt to ask.
If you have a bank account, try to stay away from using checks or your debit card, instead use cash as much as you can. If you stay away from using these then you will be less likely to over draw your bank account, as many banks will charge you a hefty penalty if you happen to overdraft your account.
The more you stay busy the less likely you will be to spend money on stuff that you don’t need. Also you should be studying a lot anyways, and keep the parties to a minimum, if you must party every weekend, be sure to buy cheap beer, don’t go for the luxury imports. Learning how to manage a budget while you are in college is a great way to prepare yourself for the real world, as you will also have to maintain a tight budget when it comes time to start repayment on your student loan. Try as hard as you can not to fall behind and you should be good.
